Betfair is the biggest gambling site in the world bar none. It has been that way for many years, beginning as a small betting exchange based out of London, England, and growing into a global brand. In Canada, it is by far the best way to bet on sports, and that applies whether you want to use eChecks or not (they are one of the most popular payment methods on Betfair for Canadian customers).
There are many benefits to Betfair, including the variety of site options, from slots and table games, to a betting exchange and sports book; the best odds, which is thanks to the competitive nature of the betting exchange; and the many markets, which allow you to bet on all sports and all leagues.
With that in mind, and with an exciting few months of sport ahead of us, we have compiled some big tips for you. All of these have been taken from the Betfair exchange and sportsbook, and we’ve used our knowledge of global sports and leagues to offer you tips across the board.
We love soccer. It might not be as popular here in Canada as it is elsewhere in the world, but the popularity is growing across the whole of North America. Gamblers also love this sport as you can’t beat soccer when it comes to the Outright markets and the Win/Lose/Draw markets, with huge odds and the ability to use a little knowledge to secure big wins.
The biggest European soccer teams are currently in their offseason, playing exhibition games and tournaments, but the biggest leagues (including the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga and German Bundesliga) will all kick-off within the next two weeks. So, with that in mind, and with some big odds on offer, who do we think will win all of those leagues, and is there any other value available?
English Premier League
As the second favorites, priced very well, Manchester City are a great bet to win the EPL. They have one of the biggest and strongest squads and have essentially bought their way to success. They fell flat last season and we predicted them to do just that (we also backed the eventual winners last year), but this year they have one key link: Raheem Sterling. The English winger is a superstar in the making and will give Manchester City that extra oomph needed to secure a Premier League title this year.
Spanish La Liga
Real Madrid are the Manchester City of Spain, in that they have essentially bought their way to success. They have the most expensive team in the world, but this didn’t lead them to any sort of major glory last season and we have our doubts it will do so this season. Barcelona have the best squad, with players that truly work together. If you add up the individual talents then Madrid will come out on top, but as a team you can’t beat Barcelona and our money will go on them to win the league.
We’ll not mention the Bundesliga, as we can’t see beyond Bayern Munich and you won’t get a good price. However, there is some good value to be had in the Champions League and Europa League. For the latter, we quite fancy Liverpool and Juventus, both of whom we expect to drop into the competition after exiting the Champions League, whilst for the Champions League itself, it’s Barcelona all of the way. Take Dortmund to make it far, as you’ll get a great price on them reaching the Semi-Final, but it will be too much for them to win the whole thing.
The biggest tournament in rugby union is just around the corner, with the Rugby World Cup 2015 due to kick-off in England in September. The All Blacks are the short-priced favorites for this competition and there is no value there, but we think that the winner will come from the Northern Hemisphere. England are a good price to use home advantage to win the whole competition, but they have a tendency to mess-up when the pressure is on. They can beat the best in the world and they do have experience winning the World Cup in 2003, but be sure to make your bet an Each Way just incase they fall at the final hurdle. Ireland are also a good bet and you’ll get them for a bigger price. They are a strong, quick and competent side and on their day they can deal with everything that the New Zealands, Australias and South Africas of the world can throw at them. Again, make sure your bet is Each Way, and even with two Each Way bets on two different teams, you’ll still be in for a huge profit when either of them wins.
Although the attention will be on the World Cup and on Rugby Union in England this summer, there are also some big rugby league competitions on the go. The ever-enjoyable Super League is looking like it will climax in one of its most exciting years ever with the 2015 Grand Final, and at odds of around 3/1, we fancy Saint Helens (currently the third favorites) to claim glory there.
After the disappointment of the Mayweather fight a couple of months ago, boxing seemed to take another hit, but this sport still seems to be growing, getting back to the golden age. There are some amazing fighters coming through the ranks and many of them are due to fight this September, in a month that could be the most exciting that this sport has seen for a decade.
We’re going out on a limb by saying that outsider Tyson Fury will defeat the champ Wladimir Klitschko to take the biggest title in the sport, whilst we also expect victories for Cotto against Alvarez and for Anthony Joshua, who will also one day (without a doubt) defeat the winner of the Fury/Klitschko contest. Many fights are still listed as potential contests, but some of the best ones to look out for include Kell Brook versus Amir Khan (get your money on the outsider Brook) and Callum Smith vs Rocky Fielding (get your money on Fielding).
The boxing world is also hoping for a fight between Mayweather and someone like Khan, but Mayweather is not ready to risk losing and knows that if he fights someone like Khan (or one of the many other young and exciting fighters in the division) he will lose. He is therefore set to see out his career by fighting no-hopers. He doesn’t deserve anymore respect. However, if he does change his mind and fights someone with talent, then get your money on his opponent.
Football is one of the biggest sports in North America and one that many Canadians like to have a flutter on. The previous Super Bowl was one of the best yet, and there was also a fair share of excitement and controversy in the playoffs. Hopefully Super Bowl 50, played in early 2016, will be just as exciting.
The season has yet to kickoff, but it’s a short and action-packed season and as soon as it begins, we’ll be looking towards its climax. Therefore, it’s best to get your money on early, when there are still big question marks over the best teams and when you can still get huge odds on likely winners. Of course, this makes it a difficult time to tip the victor, but we’ve done our research and fancy our chances of getting this one right.
The Seahawks are currently the favorites, and there is also a fair share of people backing New England to win again. We think the Seahawks will go far, but the Patriots will likely fail early in the playoffs. For us, it’s a toss-up between the Broncos and the Packers, and in the end our money will go on the Green Bay Packers, who you can get for as much as 9/1 on Betfair. This means that a $10 bet will net you a cool $100.
There is little doubt that Louis Hamilton will secure victory in the Driver’s Championship for the 2015 F1 season, the odds aren’t great but a win is a win and he’s a dead-cert to secure the title. Elsewhere, we also recommend that you keep an eye on Shaun Murphy for upcoming snooker tournaments. He is usually priced around 10/1 and is having one of the best years of his career. Alternatively, get your Lay bets on Ronnie O’Sullivan, who is towards the end of his career and is making big mistakes, yet is still consistently priced as the favorite because of his reputation. Anthony McGill is also a great player with big things ahead, so if you can find a good price for him then be sure to get on it.
