Canada Lottery Jackpot Winner on 18th BirthdayWhat did you do on your 18th birthday? If you live in Quebec, chances are you purchased your first alcoholic beverage, or partook in your first gambling endeavor. Maybe you even did both. Ms. Charlie Lagarde of Montérégie did, and she’ll be thanking her lucky stars for the rest of her days because of it.

Canada Lottery Jackpot Winner trikes it Rich on 18th Birthday

Ms. Lagarde has to be one of Canada’s luckiest lottery winners of all time. Sure, we hear tale of individuals, and even groups, winning massive amounts of money on the lottery. They scratch the biggest winning tickets, hit the 6/49, or land a multi-million jackpot at the local casino. But how many of them can say they did it on the very first day they were eligible to play?

That’s precisely what happened to young Charlie Lagarde last month. On March 14, 2018, she awoke to a whole new world of opportunities. It was her 18th birthday, which meant she’s now an adult with access to many more things, like casinos, lottery tickets, and alcoholic beverages.

To celebrate her big day, Ms. Lagarde went to the SAQ for a bottle of sparkling wine, and purchased her very first scratch-off lottery ticket at the Couche-Tard convenience store on rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste, in Beloeil. Her ticket of choice? A $4 Gagnant à vie! (or Winner for life!).

Canada’s Luckiest Lottery Winner Takes the Weekly Cash

When she arrived home, she began scratching off the ticket. Within moments, she found herself holding the granddaddy of them all. Ms. Lagarde not only struck it rich on her very first lottery ticket, the winning combination appeared in the first game section she scratched.

Now, she was faced with a very tough decision. To redeem the grand prize, she had two options. She could collect $1,000 every week for the rest of her life, or take a one-time lump sum payout of $1,000,000.

It wasn’t an easy decision. In fact, she took almost two weeks to mull it over before heading to the Loto-Quebec’s claims centre in Montreal on March 26. Ultimately, she chose the $1,000 weekly annuity. She is, after all, only 18 years old.

Ms. Lagarde says she has a passion for traveling, and plans to use some of the money for that purpose. She would also like to study photography. “One of my dreams would be to work for National Geographic,” she said.

$1,000/Wk the Right Choice!

According to a spokesperson for the Crown corporation, Ms. Lagarde made the right choice, especially since the Canada lottery jackpot winner will not be taxed. She will get to keep every dollar of the weekly grand payout.

The average employee in the province of Quebec earns $952 per week, which translates to about $50,000 per year, before taxes. As such, Ms. Lagarde, at just 18, will already be netting well over the average annual salary.

Besides, had she taken the cool million now, it would only equal about 20 years worth of weekly payments. At only 18 years of age, Charlie is looking to collect well over a million in winnings. And with that, here’s to a long and healthy life for Canada’s luckiest lottery winner!
